Reflections and Resources for January by Joanna Quintrell

Greetings from the Journey Center staff!

I’m writing this just after Christmas and, I don’t know about you, but this is the week when my heart and mind become engaged in both reflecting on the year that is just finishing and turning toward the new year that will soon be here. I find myself remembering blessings and joys, sorrows and challenges, wisdom gained and love shared in these past twelve months. There is always much gratitude as well as some regret, and this is all part of being a human being…

Looking ahead to a new year is an experience of wondering and hopefulness for me. I become very aware that each breath is a gift from God and I know that I am being invited once again to trust that the One who has been with me every moment of my life will continue to be with me in every moment of 2013. I love these ancient words of encouragement from Psalm 139:

Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.

What a comforting reminder that wherever our paths lead in the year ahead, we will never be alone…

·There are still a few spots left for this wonderful annual retreat weekend, which so many people look forward to as a way of beginning the year in quietness and contemplation …A Winter Contemplative Retreat Weekend at St. Columba’s Retreat House, Inverness (Point Reyes area); Friday, January 11th (afternoon) – Sunday, January 13th (noon). The world in winter is a place of hushed sounds and muted colors. Gone are the riotous color and dancing leaves of the fall. Trees are bare, bulbs are planted but waiting underground for spring. There is a sense of silence, of a great quieting down and with it an invitation to quiet ourselves and listen more carefully to our hearts and to the Holy. Please join us as the new year begins for this contemplative retreat, which will incorporate times of silence and solitude with guided group sessions. Spiritual direction sessions will be available. Retreat facilitators are spiritual directors Helen Cepero, Cecilia Tonna, Jamie Knutsen, Ruah Bull and Julie Miller. ·NEW- We welcome guest teacher Catherine Regan! Awakening the Dreamer: Contemplative Prayer and the Great Turning…Sat., Jan 26th, 9:30am-4pm “See I am doing something new! It springs forth even now. Do you not perceive it?”(Is.43:19). The Holy Spirit is working something new on the earth and in us. God is showing us that we are a part of an interconnected and ever-unfolding Reality bigger than we can see. Our morning session will lay a foundation of understanding about the state of our Earth Community at this time by presenting excerpts from Awakening the Dreamer –a symposium that boldly envisions bringing forth a spiritually fulfilling, environmentally sustainable and socially just human presence on Earth. With open mind and heart we will ask: Where are we? How did we get here? What is possible now? Where do we go from here? The afternoon will be an exploration of the relationship between contemplative prayer and the ‘something new’ wanting to be born. Our communal reflection will be guided by Joanna Macy’s framework for the Great Turning from an industrial growth society to a life-sustaining society. We will begin and end the day with Silence where true communion resides. Facilitator: Catherine Regan Ph.D. is a spiritual director, clinical psychologist and adjunct faculty member at Mercy Center, Burlingame. She has a special interest in the relationship between contemplative spiritual practice and the call to live in harmony with life on Earth.
