Greetings from the Journey Center staff!
For the past two weeks, I have been unable to tend to most of the gardening chores due to “tweaking” my lower back and knee. What a change from the intense daily gardening that I have been enjoying over the past many months… but I have still wandered in the garden, picking ripe tomatoes and corn, and watching everything grow like crazy!
It’s an interesting experience to not be able to “tend” the garden like it needs, especially since my husband has been away backpacking and has not been here to help. Weeds have popped up in many places, berry vines are growing into the green beans and across the sidewalk, winter squash plants are taking over the back yard and I haven’t been able to “corral” the zucchini, so it is also creeping across the garden, ready to move into adjacent beds.
This reminds me of what happens when I get too busy to tend my own heart and spirit. I get focused on my external life and all the tasks and situations that call for my attention. Days go by, I can’t seem to find time to journal, silence and solitude go out the window…and the next thing I know, someone asks me how I’m doing and I realize that I don’t actually know! Once again I find that I need to take some deep breaths, quiet my heart and mind, and check in with myself.
At the Journey Center, we offer an oasis where this kind of connecting becomes possible…a peaceful place where you can come as you are- to learn, to pray, to meditate, to breath, to notice, to find your way back to the present moment and your own true heart. To that place where the Holy One dwells, the One who knows you and invites you to tend the garden of your spirit.
(Oh, and by the way…I just got the news that my knee and back are better and I can once again tend my garden! Oh, happy day! Watch out zucchini- here I come!)
